We have an expanding and evolving Arts programme at Hugh Myddelton with varied and exciting opportunities for all ages. With a designated music suite and a specialist music teacher qualified both in primary teaching and in music performance, children have high quality, engaging tuition.
Singing is thriving with two choirs and weekly singing assemblies led by Ms. Elander. Our brass and keyboard tutor, Mr. Heeley, works alongside Mrs. Raggatt, enabling upper key stage two children to competently read and play two-handed keyboard pieces. In addition, the school band tackles a wide range of styles, competently performing with several harmony parts and children improvising solos. EYFS and KS1 use a wide range of untuned and tuned percussion instruments to improvise, compose and respond to music. KS2 build on this foundation, learning to read music notation and perform with increasing fluency, control and expression.
In partnership with Arts First, Hugh Myddelton have specialist peripatetic tutors. All children learn ukulele in Year 3 and then have the opportunity to progress onto guitar. Equally, all children learn the recorder as a foundation for progressing onto the clarinet. There are regular lunchtime music clubs and a mini-music club for EYFS and KS1 children after school.
Music helps to bring about a sense of community in our school, with regular productions and performances to parents and Islington wide choral events. Children go on trips to see the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Festival Hall and the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican. Studying a scheme of classroom work in preparation, children are able to appreciate their world-class orchestral experiences.
Music at Hugh Myddelton is growing and we hope to enrich children’s lives further with expanded provision and a greater range of instruments to study.
