Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium Grant is additional funding given to publicly-funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.

For the 2017 to 2018 financial year, schools have received the following funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years:

  • £1,320 for primary-aged pupils

Schools also received £1,900 for each pupil who:

  • has been looked after for 1 day or more
  • has been adopted from care
  • has left care under: a special guardianship order, a residence order or a child arrangement order.

Pupil Premium Report 2016-17

 The chart below shows the impact our Pupil Premium Grant had on the attainment of disadvantaged pupils in Year 6 at Hugh Myddelton in 2017.

Pupil Premium Strategy 2017-18

This year, we estimate that we will receive a Pupil Premium Grant of £319,440. Our Pupil Premium Strategy is informed by an understanding of our pupils and their individual needs. School staff meet daily to look at samples of pupils' work, observe their learning and behaviour in class and around the school and analyse achievement data. The key barriers to achievement for our disadvantaged pupils are:

- Speech and language delay when entering the Early Years

We tackle this by investing in specialist support from the NHS Speech and Language Service in implementing the WellComm Speech and Language Toolkit. This is complemented by our partnership with City University's Language and Communication Science Department.

- Gaps in learning

We tackle this by investing in additional, experienced teaching staff and rigorous, externally-moderated and verified assessment systems that identify gaps in individual pupils' knowledge and understanding. These systems are also used to track the impact of strategies, interventions and initiatives on targeted individuals and groups of pupils.

- Access to extra-curricular provision

We tackle this by subsidising access to all extra-curricular provision, much of which is provided free-of-charge to targeted pupils. This comes in the form of Breakfast Club, individual music tuition, clubs or booster classes before or after school, during the holidays or at weekends.

- Lower attainment of the highest levels in English

We tackle this in a variety of ways. We invest in provision for physical development in the Early Years, ensuring that pupils have the gross/fine motor control and strength and stamina required as they develop their understanding of print and writing. We provide additional learning opportunities for targeted pupils at the beginning and end of the school day. Out Read Write Inc. Phonics programme is supplemented by a member of staff delivering the Keep Up intervention to ensure that no child falls behind their peers. In Year 5 and 6, the Fresh Start programme consolidates English skills and builds pupils' confidence. More able pupils are also targeted for the 'I LEAD' leadership programme, run by member of the Senior Leadership Team.

During 2017-18 financial year, we will be reinvesting in the most effective strategies for raising the achievement of disadvantaged pupils, including:

  • additional, experienced teaching staff;
  • specialist training for support staff to deliver focused and resourced interventions;
  • Saturday and holiday booster classes;
  • one-to-one tutoring for targeted individuals;
  • free access to after-school clubs and music tuition.

The impact of all interventions, initiatives and strategies is evaluated in daily pupil progress meetings. Entry and exit data tracks the performance of individual pupils and groups (such as those identified as being more able), usually every 6 weeks, informing our ongoing Pupil Premium Strategy. Summative test data is also analysed in terms of groups of pupils who have attended booster classes, have been tutored or who have accessed the extended day provision or whose teachers have received specific training.

The impact of the school's Pupil Premium strategy is monitored reviewed through daily pupil progress meetings and weekly Senior Leadership Meetings. The strategies are reviewed periodically with the School Improvement Advisor and the Governing Body. The next review point will be December 2017, when the new achievement data for Reception, Year 2 and Year 6 is validated. Outcomes for disadvantaged pupils are always compared to all pupils nationally.
